NEXTEL Wireless Local Number Portability

Nextel offers Wireless Local Number Portability (WLNP), the ability to switch wireless carriers without giving up your existing phone numbers. Now, you can bring your current wireless or landline (business or home) number to Nextel. Now, more markets have WLNP available!

How It Works

  1. Check to see if your number is eligible to be transferred to Nextel.1

  2. If eligible, you'll be prompted to select a phone and rate plan for that number.

  3. To help this transfer go quickly and easily, we request you have a current bill on hand from your existing carrier. This will have the information we'll need, such as:
    • Your phone number
    • Account number AND social security number/Tax ID
    • billing name and address and account password (if applicable)
Note: It's important that you don't cancel your service with your old service provider, Nextel takes care of that for you!2

What To Expect

Since number portability requires the simultaneous efforts of multiple companies, it may take time for your phone number to become active on the Nextel network.

Activation times will vary, depending on the type of number portability. Nextel's systems support the transfer of a number in as little as a day but the process could take up to 2 weeks, depending on the readiness of your previous carrier's systems. The transfer of a landline number may take longer and could take up to 2-4 weeks due to system processing with landline telephone carriers. However, it may take longer due to circumstances beyond Nextel's control.

Regardless of the length of time, your Nextel phone will be active with a temporary number as soon as you receive it — including the ability to use Direct Connect®, Nextel's built-in walkie-talkie feature. Since you will have this temporary number for only a short time, there is no need to give this number out.

Once the number you have brought to Nextel is activated, your temporary number will be deactivated and service with your previous carrier will be canceled automatically. You will receive a text message on your Nextel phone letting you know that activation is complete. Simply turn your phone off and back on again to complete the activation process.
