FAQs Group ConnectSM Overview | Billing and Minutes | How to Use Group ConnectSM Service

Group ConnectSM Overview

  1. What's the difference between Direct Connect® service and Group ConnectSM service?
Direct Connect® and Group ConnectSM services both offer the same great convenience – you can get right through instantly with the push of a button using your cell phone's long-range, digital walkie-talkie feature.
The difference between these two walkie-talkie services is the number of people you can contact:
    • Direct Connect® service lets you instantly contact one other Nextel customer.
    • Group ConnectSM service lets you instantly contact 3 to 25 Nextel customers all together, all at once.

  2. What do I need to use Group ConnectSM service?
You need these items to contact a group of up to 25 people at once:
    • Nextel phone
    • Rate plan provisioned with Direct Connect® or Group ConnectSM minutes Plus, both you and the people you're contacting must:
    • Have the same Area ID and Network ID (first and second parts of Direct Connect ® numbers – Area ID*Network ID*Member ID).
    • Be members of an activated Talkgroup
    • Be physically located within the same home market. Check coverage in your area.

  3. What do I need to do to get Group ConnectSM service?
If your rate plan includes Direct Connect® service, then you automatically get Group ConnectSM service on a pay-as-you-go basis. You can add more Group ConnectSM minutes to your service by contacting a representative.

  4. Do I need a different number to receive or place a Group ConnectSM call?
You need to have a Talkgroup ID, a unique number associated with each Talkgroup that you or your Account Administrator creates.

  5. What is a Talkgroup?
A Talkgroup is a predefined group of up to 25 people who want to contact each other using Group ConnectSM service. Anyone on the Talkgroup can initiate and participate in Group ConnectSM calls (as long as they're in their home market). A Talkgroup can contain anywhere from 3 to 25 people as long as everyone has the same Area ID and Network ID (first and second parts of Direct Connect® numbers – Area ID*Network ID*Member ID). Each network can contain up to 200 Talkgroups.

  6. What is Group ConnectSM Management?
Group ConnectSM Management, available through your MyNextel account, lets you manage your Talkgroups online. Currently, Group ConnectSM Management lets account administrators:
    • Create a new Talkgroup
    • View a complete list of the Talkgroups on your account
    • View a complete list of all the members in a Talkgroup on the account
    • Manage Talkgroup members

  7. Where can I use Group ConnectSM service?
You can use Group ConnectSM service when you are in your home market (see coverage) to contact members of your Talkgroup who are also physically located in your home market. At this time, Group ConnectSM service does not offer nationwide calling capability.

  8. Who can use Group ConnectSM service to contact me?
Only people in your predefined Talkgroups can contact you using Group ConnectSM service.

  9. Can I use Group ConnectSM if I am on a Nextel Business Network?
In order to use Group ConnectSM service, you will first need to move to a different network, which changes your Direct Connect® (Private ID) number. If you are on a Nextel Business Network and are interested in using Group ConnectSM service, contact a representative.
