How to Use Group ConnectSM Service

  1. How do I set up or edit a Talkgroup?
If you're an account administrator, log into Group ConnectSM Management to set up and edit your Talkgroups. For more information on how to use Group ConnectSM Management, download this quick reference guide.

  2. Once I'm set up on a Talkgroup, do I need to do anything to my phone to participate in Group ConnectSM calls?
Yes. To be included in a Talkgroup's Group ConnectSM calls, you need to activate the Talkgroup on your phone. You can only activate one Talkgroup – and therefore be available for Group ConnectSM calls with only one Talkgroup – at a time.

  3. How do I activate a Talkgroup on my phone?
    For i95cl, i90c, i88s, i85s, i80s, i60c, i58sr, i55sr, i50sx, i35s and i30sx phones:
    1. Press the "#" key.
    2. Enter the Talkgroup ID.
    3. Press the option key under the word "Join."
    4. Press "m" until Group or Group Ready appears.
    5. Manually enter your Talkgroup number, or scroll using the right/left arrow keys until your Talkgroup number appears.
    6. Press the option key under "OK."

  4. How do I place a Group ConnectSM call?
    For i95cl, i90c, i88s, i85s, i80s, i60c, i58sr, i55sr, i50sx, i35s and i30sx phones:
    1. Enter # and the Talkgroup ID, or find the Talkgroup ID or name in your phonebook.
    2. If you are not already active in the Talkgroup, press the option key under Join and press the walkie-talkie button.
    3. Once you are active in the Talkgroup, simply press the walkie-talkie button and speak after your phone chirps.
    4. Release the walkie-talkie button to hear the response.
    5. All active members of the Talkgroup will hear their phones chirp, which lets them know a Group ConnectSM call is beginning (chirp not available on all phones).

Follow these steps for all other phones:

    1. Press "m" until Group or Group Ready appears.
    2. If you are not already active in the Talkgroup, manually enter your Talkgroup number, or scroll using the right/left arrow keys until your Talkgroup number appears, and press the option key under "OK."

  5. How do I know when a Group ConnectSM call is starting?
    If you have an i95cl, i90c, i88s, i85s, i80s, i60c, i58sr, i55sr, i50sx, i35s or i30sx phone, it will chirp before you hear the caller's voice.

If you have a different phone, you will simply hear the person speak when the Group ConnectSM call begins.

  6. Why am I getting a "Number Not In Service 2" error message?
You can get this error message for one of two reasons: you're either in a do-not-disturb Talkgroup, or you need to re-add the Talkgroup to your service.

    First, check your active Talkgroup:

    • If you have the do-not-disturb Talkgroup (#254/DND) activated, then that is the source of your error message.
    • If you have another Talkgroup activated and are still getting the error message, ask your Account Administrator to re-add the Talkgroup to your service.

If you are the Account Administrator, contact a representative for help.

  7. I want to leave my phone on, but I'm not sure I'll be able to participate in a Group ConnectSM call. What can I do?
Here are some suggestions for monitoring incoming Group ConnectSM calls or to prevent a Group ConnectSM call from coming through:
    • Turn off your phone's speaker.
    • Use VibraCall® to notify you quietly of a Group ConnectSM call.
    • Join a do-not-disturb Talkgroup (#254/DND).
      • When you join this Talkgroup, you will receive an error message (Number Not In Service 2).
      • You will not be pulled into Talkgroups.
      • You will not hear any incoming Group ConnectSM communications.
      • There are no airtime charges associated with this Talkgroup.
    • Create and then join an inactive Talkgroup.
    • Select "Talkgroup Silent" to silence Group ConnectSM communications. Note: Charges for participation in a Group ConnectSM call still apply.

  8. Do Call Alerts work with Group ConnectSM service?
No. You can send and receive Call Alerts when using Direct Connect® service or Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service, but not Group ConnectSM service.
