Billing and Minutes

  1. How am I charged for Direct Connect® and Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls?
You are only charged for the Direct Connect® and Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls that you initiate. For those calls:
    • Calls round to the second.
    • Minutes deduct from your rate plan's monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes.
    • Overage is $0.15 per minute.
    • The first person to press the Direct Connect® button after 6 seconds of silence is considered the call initiator and assumes charges for the call going forward.
For Direct Connect® and in-market Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls:
    • There is no additional charge other than the Direct Connect® minutes you use.
    • Overage charges may apply if you exceed your rate plan's monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes.
For market-to-market Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls, you can pay as you go ($0.10 per minute per call participant), or you can choose an unlimited access option. With unlimited access, you are only billed for the Direct Connect® minutes you use.
    • Unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access: $10 a month per phone for the service. Minutes deduct from your rate plan's monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes.
    • Unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access with Text Messaging: $15 a month per phone for the service. Nationwide Direct ConnectSM minutes deduct from your rate plan's monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes.

  2. Why am I being billed for Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service? I thought the service was free.
Nextel offered an introductory period through July 31, 2003, during which Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access charges were waived. Messages were included on June, July, and August invoices about the rollout and introductory period.

Billing for Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls started August 1, 2003, and applies to walkie-talkie calls placed from one market to another market. There's no charge - other than minutes - for walkie-talkie calls placed within a market. Minutes for market-to-market calls also deduct from your Direct Connect® bucket of minutes.

  3. What is a market-to-market call?
A market-to-market call is a Nationwide Direct ConnectSM call placed from one calling area to another. See the coverage map for maps of calling areas.

  4. How do I tell what my calling area is?
See the coverage map to identify your home market. If you're going to be visiting another area, you can also use the coverage map to confirm Nationwide Direct ConnectSM in-market calling coverage.

  5. Do the Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls I make count toward my Direct Connect® minutes?
Yes. Any time you initiate a Nationwide Direct ConnectSM call, the minutes are deducted from your rate plan's monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes.

  6. If I have unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access and I place a walkie-talkie call to someone in another market, what will the charge be? What if I have pay-as-you-go pricing?
When you initiate a walkie-talkie call to another market, you are charged for both legs of the call. Here's how it works for both access options. See Call Scenarios for additional info.

If you have unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access, then you are only charged the monthly $10.00 or $15.00 flat fee, no matter how many calls you initiate. The minutes for both legs of the call come out of your monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes. Overage applies.

If you use Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service on a pay-as-you-go basis, then you are charged $0.10 per minute for both legs of the call. The minutes for both legs of the call come out of your monthly allotment of Direct Connect® minutes. Overage applies.

  7. How can I add more Direct Connect® minutes to my rate plan?
You can add minutes by contacting a representative at 1-800-325-3315

  8. If others contact me using Direct Connect® or Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service, will the call count toward my Direct Connect® minutes?
No. The person who initiates the call is billed for the Direct Connect® minutes and (if applicable) the Nationwide Direct ConnectSM charge.

However, if you press the Direct Connect® button after 6 seconds of silence, then you are considered the call initiator and will be billed for the call going forward.

Also, if you respond to a Call Alert, you are considered the call initiator and are billed as such.

  9. Am I charged for Call Alerts?
No, you are not charged for sending a Call Alert. However, the first person to respond to the call alert will be considered the call initiator and will be billed for the call.

  10. What are these charges on my bill for Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service?
The Nationwide Direct ConnectSM charges on your invoice are for calls you initiate from one market to another market. These calls are billed at $0.10 per minute (rounded to the second) for both legs of the call.

  11. What's up with the 6 seconds of silence?
Walkie-talkie calls automatically end after 6 seconds of silence. The call initiator is charged for the call up to that point. The next person to press the Direct Connect® button is considered the call initiator and assumes charges for the call from that point until it ends or another 6 seconds of silence pass.

  12. How do I sign up for unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access?
    Contact a representative at 1-800-325-3315

  13. If I sign up for Nextel service today and choose not to add unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access, can I add it later?
Of course! When you are ready to add unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service, contact a representative at 1-800-325-3315

  14. If I sign up for unlimited Nationwide Direct ConnectSM access or switch to a rate plan that includes Nationwide Direct ConnectSM service, when does the change take effect?
Immediately. All Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls are covered by the recurring monthly charge as soon as the customer makes the change. If the change takes place in the middle of a billing cycle, the customer will see prorated charges accordingly.

  15. How will Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls appear on my bill?
If you have a MyNextel account, you can view details for Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls online at View My Bill. For a minimal fee, you can have the same details included on your paper invoice. Note: Call detail will only be available for market-to-market Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls.

  16. How can I tell if I made the call and whom I called?
If you manage a business or personal account and have registered with MyNextel, you can view call details online.

Go to MyNextel and select Billing Statements. Details on your market-to-market Nationwide Direct ConnectSM calls are displayed there, including the date, time, number, and location of the call.

For $2.50 per phone, you can have the call detail included with your paper invoice.
